Pership Group builds SL’s first container conversion, multipurpose building

Exotic Asian Living, owned by the Pership Group, in an effort to revolutionise living and work space, has built Sri Lanka’s first 3-storey commercial building constructed primarily using containers, adjacent to the main Katugastota road in Kandy.

J. V Edwards, Deputy Chairman/Managing Director Pership Group, explaining the concept, said that, “Container conversion based construction projects are not a new concept. It has however been severely under utilised in the past and is only now coming into the limelight. With many potential home and business owners recognizing the value of fast, durable and efficient construction methods in order to achieve a creative office space, utility or living space; Exotic Asian Living has provided a cost effective, time saving, business effective, convenient solution both internationally and right here in Sri Lanka. In essence, we have successfully bridged the gap between conventional construction methods and container based conversions.”

The company said that the 3-storied commercial building in the heart of Katugastota town is a clear indication to the industry that using containers for construction can deliver the same result as normal construction in a more cost effective and architecturally efficient manner. “This project serves as a revelation for future builders that within a short span of three and half months a client is able to start seeing significant returns on investment with better utilization of site space,” it said in a statement.

The newly built unit comprises the ground floor, first floor and a second floor, which includes a penthouse and terrace, each floor comprising of 960 square feet with fine detailed finishes.

The concept of utilising containers to construct alternate living spaces is used widely across Europe and East Asia. The intrinsic strength of a container, as well as its core competency of stability and durability come together to provide an ideal material for construction. With the advances in interior design and building materials, a container can be converted into a range of structures, from a simple back garden office space, to a multi storey building, capable of diverse design elements and the potential to cater to any ambiance the client wishes to create while maintaining the fine finishes required by contemporary constructions.
