Guiding Light
The Senior Guide Adventure Camp 2014 held in Polonnaruwa, was an exciting event for our company. We reached Maduru Oya Army Training School on February 13. The surrounding was really well kept. First, the campers had to undergo a medical check-up. Then we were divided in to four groups named Alpha, Bravo, Charley and Delta.
After lunch we started our challenges. Alpha group ran first about 4km and then there were various obstacles. We were guided and encouraged by the Army officers. It was a marvellous experience. Army officers always stood for our protection.
At night we were given mathematical sums to do within a short period of time. Thus we trained our brain to face day to day challenges. We met many friends from all nooks and corners of this little isle. At night we sang songs with our new friends. Next morning after breakfast we went on a hike. We were given a map, which we followed. The most amazing experience was riding the canoe.
There was a session of creativity. We created a house using matchsticks. At night we had a marvellous experience on hike cooking in the jungle. We practiced using our eyes in the dark while exploring nature. Next day was an exciting treasure hunt. We followed the symbols according to the task sheet. It was really a trek, which tested our team spirits and observing mind. Finally we found our treasure which weighed many kilograms.
At 6 pm we started our camp fire, which was a fun-filled event. Flames of the fire symbolized the warmth and friendship of Girl Guides. Then we had an out-door dinner. Early next morning, we went to see Maduru Oya dam.
We then had our closing ceremony. Each participant was awarded a certificate and a badge. On behalf of the campers it is my duty to pay our sincere gratitude to the Camp Director, Miss. Vajira Silva and her team who were there with us. The Army officers who gave it a real meaning must be highly admired. Major Kelum Alwis was the giant hand in the programme. Director co-curricular activity counselling and Guidance and Peace Education Mr. Y.M.N.D Yapa’s arrival added colour to the event.
In a nutshell the programme was what we really need to become, responsible leaders.
