Prices of vegetables cultivated in the hill country are likely to remain high for the next few weeks due to the prevailing dry weather.
Hill country farmers say every year they have to increase the price of vegetables in the drier months of June and July.

They said water is scarce and the crops wither because of the heat and lack of water. Farmers are sometimes forced to pawn their valuables to get by during this season, as their vegetable plots are destroyed.

According to the Nuwara Eliya Economic Center, this week’s prices of some vegetables were as follows: Cabbage per kg from Rs 85 to Rs 90, Carrot between Rs 160 and Rs 165, Beet from Rs 90 to Rs 95, Radish from Rs 30 to Rs 35, Potatoes from Rs 120 to Rs. 125, Red Salad leaves Rs. 350 Green Salad leaves Rs 100, Broccoli Rs 600, Cabbage flowers Rs 350 and Tomatoes Rs. 250.
