Age Group Aquatic Championship from June 26
View(s):The 41st annual Sri Lanka Schools Age Group Aquatic Championship will be held from June 26 to 29 at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex in Colombo. The four-day swimming gala has already attracted a total of over 2600 swimmers from 153 schools across the country, which includes 430 relay teams. A total of 164 events – 140 individuals and 24 relay events – have been lined up under six different age categories.
“We will award certificates for those who reach the qualified timing for the age groups of below 13 years, which includes Under-9, 11 and 13. In the remaining three age categories – Under-15, 17 and 19 – the top eight finishers will be awarded certificates while the top three of each event will receive medals,” Malka Jayasinghe, the secretary of Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association said.
Swimmers of the age categories of Under-15, 17 and 19 will vie for 16 championship trophy awards besides the awards presented for the Best School in boys and girls categories. The trophies on offer are for the Senior Champion in boys and girls categories as well as the Overall Championship in both segments.
Among the number of schools competing 76 will be boys while 44 are girls with 33 being mixed schools.
Western Province has a strong participation of 65 schools followed by the Central Province which fields 25 schools in total. Southern Province will be represented by 20 schools followed by Sabaragamuwa (14), Uva (12) and North Western (10). Seven schools will compete from the Northern Province. Defending champions St. Joseph’s College Colombo and Mahamaya Girls’ School Kandy come out as favourites this year as well.
