Wycherley International School hosts the first International Primary School Spelling Bee
View(s):The First Inter International Primary Schools’ Spelling Bee Contest was the brainchild of Wycherley International School, Colombo 7. It was held at the BMICH on June 14, 2014.
It was encouraging to see twenty nine young entrants ready to participate in this event.The entire competition was worked out in four preliminary rounds, with eight schools eventually qualifying to enter the final round.
The young finalists were from Gateway College, Negombo Lakeland Inter-American School, Royal Institute Girls’ School, Royal Institute, Havelock Town, Royal Institute, Nugegoda, St. Nicholas’ International College, Negombo, Stafford International School and Wycherley International School.
At the end of an exciting finish, Rishira Fernando of Lakeland Inter – American School was picked the Winner with all correct solutions, while Chaidanya Kandeepan of Wycherley International School was adjudged the Runner-Up of this contest.
In his address to the gathering of students, teachers and parents, Mr. Kingsley Jayasinghe, the Principal of Wycherley International School traced the long history of competitive ‘Spelling Bees’ amongst young children. He upheld to them the importance of absolute accuracy in spelling, especially in today’s context of the availability of alternative spelling trends.
