Those remarks came when he was receiving treatment at the National Hospital earlier this week. His bed was covered by screens with three police personnel standing guard. Later in the week, he was produced before Panadura Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta and remanded till July 2.

Ven Vijitha Thera claimed he was unable to identify the persons involved in the incident, adding that, he was previously threatened by a group of monks.

CCD Director Nuwan Wedasinghe alleged that the wounds on the Thera’s body were found to be self inflicted.

He said during investigations it was revealed that the thera had planned the incident because his guard had been removed several days ago, and, as a result, he lived in constant fear, as there had been threats on his life, adding that, he had staged the attack with the hope of regaining a bodyguard.
