Familians Kurunegala lift Milo Trophy for the seventh time
Holy Family Convent lasses from the rock city of Kurunegala emerged the netball queens at the 23rd Milo All Island Schools Netball
Championship which was held at the D.A. Rajapaksa Stadium in Beliatta when they lifted the overall championship title for the seventh successive year.
The champions were way ahead having accumulated 60 points to the 25 secured by second placed Kalutara BV with Visakha Colombo coming in third with 20 points.
The Familians was first crowned netball queens in the year 2008 when it was held in their hometown Kurunegala and then retained it by winning in 2009 at (Anuradhapura) and then continued to retain the trophy in 2010 (Matale), 2011 (Matara), (2012) Polonnaruwa and Piliyandala last year.
This time too the Kurunegala lasses had the honour of qualifying to the finals in all the three age groups (U-14, 16 and 18) and they went on to bag the Under-14 and 16 titles while securing the second place in the Under-18 category which was sufficient for them to clinch the title for the seventh successive year.
Apart from emerging the overall champions one of their players Navodya
Sulakshani Ratnayake bagged the outstanding player’s award in the Under-16 category. Kalutara BV clinched the Under-18 title which also saw one of their players Kavisha Devmini being adjudged the most outstanding player while Sanudi Tuduwage of Visakha Colombo bagged the best players’ award in the Under 14 category.
The Under-14 and 16 finals turned out to be a one-sided affair with the girls’ from Kurunegala recording easy wins win over Visakha Colombo (17-10) and Presbyterian BV Dehiwela (25-10). But the Under 18 final was a closely contested with Kalutara BV prevailing with a 20-15 win over the Familians.
Meanwhile in the Division B category Baudda BV Gampola emerged the Under-14 champions while Sirimalwatte MV Kundasale took the Under 16 title and Mahaleliya MV Wariyapola the Under 18 title.
The players to win the most outstanding award in the Division ‘B’ were Shashikala Kumari of Baudda BV Gampola (Under 14), Dilki Kalhari of SirimalwatteMV Kundasale (Under 16) and Sumudu Sandamali of Mahakeliya MV Wariyapola (Under 18).Results:

Under-16: Presbyterian BV Dehiwela beat Holy Family Convent Kurunegala ‘B’ 10-9. Holy Family Convent Kurunegala ‘A’ beat Musaeus Colombo 16-10.
Under-18: Holy Family Convent Kurunegala beat Visakha Colombo 27-21. Kalutara BV beat Hillwood Kandy 27-15.
