Former national football players felicitated
View(s):The informal induction of the Ex Sri Lanka Football Players’ Association took place a fortnight ago at the Baddegana Football Complex when closer to 300 former players who donned the national jersey in the yesteryears attended a get-together. The event which was spearheaded with an initiative of four ex-Sri Lanka players Sampath Perera, Alfred Dias, Joseph Shanthakumar and Thilak Aponso, had a great impact on the olden days’ football heroes.
Two friendly games were held among four teams of two different eras. Former footballers coming from the era of 1960s and beyond were present at the event, which was fully supported by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL). Six former greats among veterans were felicitated in the evening for their services rendered to the nation through football. They were P.D. Sirisena, L.A. Ranbanda, H.A. Jayatissa, Subhani Hassimdeen, Piyadasa Perera and S.P. de Silva. The FFSL hopes to make this an annual event and by January the official launch of the Ex Sri Lanka Football Players’ Association. Through this group, the FFSL hopes to support and former national players by looking into their well-being and make use of their valuable football knowledge to the benefit of the country.
