One person was killed and over 300 houses damaged yesterday due to strong winds in Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Badulla districts, an official at the Disaster Management Centre said,

people who sustained injuries in various parts of Badulla district were admitted to hospitals in Welimada and Uva Paranagama.

A number of trees had fallen in several parts of the district cutting off electricity in several divisions too.

In Halpe, Belihuloya, 12 houses were damaged, injuring several children. Balangoda police have deployed officers in the area to ensure the safety of residents.

Balangoda Chief Inspector Gayan Prasanna said 150 people had been displaced due to the damage to property.

Meanwhile a hoarding had fallen on the Nuwara Eliya-Badulla road in the early hours of Friday morning.

The Colombo – Badulla night mail train was cancelled yesterday due to the strong winds.
