Rambukwella elected vice-chair of UN budget committee

The United Nations General Assembly has elected Chamithri Rambukwella, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York, as Vice-Chair of the Fifth Committee. Ms. Rambukwella was unanimously endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Group to represent them at the Bureau of the Fifth Committee for the 69th Session (September 2014 – August 2015) of the General Assembly. The Fifth Committee advices the General Assembly in matters pertaining to the UN budget and administrative issues.

The only other Sri Lankan to represent the Asia-Pacific Group at Fifth Committee was Ambassador Sir Claude Corea. He chaired the Fifth Committee (UN Budget) in 1958.

Prior to this appointment, Ms. Rambukwella also chaired the Committee on Conferences (2013-2014). The Committee on Conferences advises the General Assembly on matters pertaining to UN conferences in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Nairobi and Bangkok. She was not only the first Sri Lankan to chair this Committee but at 27 was also one of the youngest.

A former student of Ladies’ College, Colombo, Ms. Rambukwella was appointed as Second Secretary to the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in New York in September 2011, and has represented Sri Lanka at the Fifth Committee
since October 2011.
