New Burger King menu adds local spice
View(s):Since setting up shop in December last year, the ever popular Burger King franchise has slowly yet steadily built its fan base among Sri Lankans. The time has come, feels CEO of Softlogic Restaurants (Pvt) Ltd., Suresh Jayawardana, to give the international menu a slight tweak. “We are trying to bring in a little bit of Sri Lanka into the menu,” he shares.
Previously the menu comprised the standard international fare, including the Whopper burger and a few soda varieties but local customers were keen on flavours a little closer to home. The addition of the three new items and a whole range of beverages are all “things that our customers requested,” according to Suresh.
King Rice, is the result of the popular request for a rice meal. The meal comes at Rs. 280 per portion of herbed rice, a boneless chicken fillet and salad. In true Sri Lankan fashion, the rice comes with a tub of spiced gravy. Ideal for business lunches, Suresh divulges that in compliance to the highest standards, the King Rice dish has undergone 20 to 30 changes before finding a place among the international fast food staples on the menu.
The need for some spice in food comes naturally to the Sri Lankan palate and this is why Burger King has introduced the Spicy Chicken Burger. Having become known for the piquant grilled flavour of their patties, the star of this sandwich is a heavily seasoned, boneless, crispy chicken fillet. Perhaps still a little on the milder side of spicy than the average Sri Lankan is accustomed to, the burger is priced at Rs.390.
Fish and Chips, is yet another delicacy that Burger King offers at Rs. 400 a portion. The fish comes in a neatly packed square fillet and is fried with a satisfyingly flakey batter.
The newest additions to the beverage menu include healthier options like milkshakes that come in chocolate, vanilla and a tangy raspberry flavour at Rs. 250. For coffee drinkers, premium coffees from LavAzza have been introduced along with yet another Sri Lankan favourite, iced Milo.
