The visit by the Duchess of Cornwall

The Nagaswatha Child Center is situated at Nagaswatha, Kirulapona. We were so excited about the visit of the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker to the center. During the CHOGM on November 16, 2013 she visited our center. It was a day we will never forget.
Most of the children in the center come from a poor background. We were very happy. The center is being funded by the British Government. The duchess was pleased to note that we were learning Spoken English at the center. English is an important language to learn for a brighter future.

My ballet concert

My ballet concert was held on
May 31 at Bishop’s College auditorium. My favourite fairytale, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, was our ballet drama. I had to dance for two items. One was the tornado dance and the other one was the yellow brick road dance. I wore two different ballet costumes for each of the two dances and the yellow brick road dance costume was the most beautiful one.
My ballet school is EnL’air School of Dance and my ballet teacher is Mrs. Ayumi Ratnakumara. There are 140 students in our dance school and they all performed, wearing different, beautiful ballet costumes. The hall was fully crowded and my parents came to see the concert. Everybody gave a big clap after the concert and it was really a beautiful ballet show.

My family

There are four members in my family. They are my father, mother, brother and me. My family is a very united family. I always love to show my care to my family. I take care of my parents when they are ill. My mother cooks tasty dishes for our family. My father earns money for the family. All of us go to the temple on Poya days. When I grow up I will take care of my family more than now. I love my family.

Teenagers

Teenagers are a group of kids between the ages of 13 to 19 years, who are often restless and curious. They are mostly subject to the complaints of older people. We often wonder why this arises. Well why?One of the main reasons is the different childhood atmospheres. Back in the old days, children were always accompanied by parents or elders. But the situation today takes a totally different nature. Due to the economical status today, most households are often left to the ‘unaccompanied minors’ since both parents are employed. So, teenagers make the best of it by loitering with friends, visiting various social networks and also getting themselves into trouble. Older people do not support this type of indecent behavior and therefore complain.

Another reason for complaints about teenagers is the advancement of technology. Almost every teen today has a mobile phone, tab, ipad, MP3 player or laptop. Due to their addiction to video games and other virtual activities, they neglect their duties. They also start to become arrogant and disobedient to their parents. Their grades start getting low and they get involved in unnecessary problems.

So, as a solution to this I suggest that teenagers live with what they have and balance studies as well as fun. Also, elders please be a bit more understanding about the situation regarding technology. After all, we are living in the
21st century!

Big stuff!
Computers are one of the most popular / expensive type of technologies used in the modern world. When it was first made, it was used by the ‘Big’ people such as the government. They had a very short memory circuit and took tons of space.

As the years passed by, new inventions were made and tested, computers started to become more  portable than the first
creation. And people started having PCs (personal  computers) in their houses and offices. Now computers are very advanced and can be used for gaming,
recording and mostly work.

In my opinion, I think computers are really advanced technology and that it took a lot of brain power to make such type of machinery.

A tree speaks
Hello everyone, I’m a tree. I live in a lovely garden with all my friends around me. We have a long history which is longer than man’s. If we don’t exist on earth you can’t expect any  living organism to exist.

I can supply you fruits, flowers, leaves and timber. We can supply you food for every meal. I can give you lots of shade because I’m a big mango tree. We can give you medicine too. All my friends and I help the water cycle through transpiration. Lots of people have picnics in my shadow. It makes me happy. Lots of animals make homes on my body, such as squirrels and birds. I also help you to stop soil erosion.

But if you cut me down, you can’t get any use from me. So please protect me and my friends because trees are your lifeblood.

Uses of books
Books are a great
blessing. They are useful to us in many ways. They are our best friends. When we are in trouble, books stand by us and give us the right advice. Books console us in our sorrows. We never feel alone in the company of books.
Books are written by
experienced persons who are wise and who have mature minds. They are therefore our best guides and philosophers when we are in some confusion. Books give us inspiration to do great things. They fill our minds with noble thoughts. They improve our minds and awaken our souls.
But bad books poison our minds. We should therefore select and read good books only.
