German style win for Western lasses
View(s):The strong Western Province team massacred Southern Province by 7 goals to nil as they went on to win the Women’s Championship of the National Football Festival held at the Sports Ministry ground in Torrington Square.
The lasses from Western Province played a well structured game as they led 3-0 at halftime. They were well mannered in their moves which created fruitful openings from the midfield as they went on to record a cakewalk win. The Southerners simply could not manage the speedy attackers of Western and let the game slip off their hands.
On their way to the final, the unbeaten Western Province beat North Western 1-0 in the semi-final and recorded comfortable wins over Uva and Northern in the first round. Southern beat North Central 5-3 on penalties after their semi-final ended goalless. They won their first round game against Eastern 2-1. North Western beat North Central 4-0 to win the third place playoff.
The tournament, which attracted all nine provinces of the country, was organised by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL). FFSL President Ranjith Rodrigo graced the occasion as the chief guest with Ranjani Jayakody, the Director General of Department of Sports Development, was the guest of honour.
