Multi-talented Milroy celebrates golden jubilee in music

Journalist, film critic, subeditor, playwright, writer, music director, screenplay writer, lyricist and musician Milroy Dharmaratne of Dharmaratne Brothers fame celebrates 50 years in his musical journey with a release of his latest novel today, July 27 at 3.00pm at St Thomas’ Church Jubilee Hall, Kotte. Veteran songtress Nanda Malani will be the chief guest at this event while senior journalist Edwin Ariyadasa will be the guest of honour.

Starting as a free-lance journalist for the ‘Kala’ film magazine in 1962 Milroy worked for in number of newspapers including ‘Sarasaviya’, ‘Visithura’, ‘Wijaya’, ‘Little Star’, ‘Surathala’ and national newspapers like Lankadeepa, Diwaina, and was a film critic for ‘Yowun Janatha’, ‘Nawaliya’ and chief subeditor of ‘Tristar Puwath.

Miroy is responsible for writing the melody and music composition of a large number of evergreen Sinhala pop songs like H. R. Jothipala’s ‘Durakathanayakin’, ‘Oba Nidanna’, ‘Malin Piri Giya’. Hehas written music compositions for singers like J. A. Milton Perera, Shiromi Fernando, Paul Fernando, Felix Anton, Indrani Perera, Desmond de Silva, Saman de Silva, Latha Walpola, T. M. Jayaratne, Tissa Nadodavithana and many more.

Milroy’s name became more popular with Dharmaratne Brothers yesteryear musical group formed by four brothers namely Christie, Maxwell, Milroy and Ronald Dharmaratne.
