People cannot be deceived all the time
View(s):Kohonawala is a remote village in the Uva province located at the top of a mountain range in the Badulla district.
The village has a population of around 48 families.
Nicknamed “Ira payana nathi gama,” -the village where the sun does not rise the village has neither water, electricity nor a proper roadway.
Indeed the village is appropriately nicknamed. It is surrounded by the mountains and only a few streaks of sunlight seep in at around 10.00 am! Darkness covers the
rest of the day.
“The president came last year and promised us proper roadways and electricity, however to date no action has been taken to fulfill this promise” said R.M Rathnayake, a villager.
A group of politicians from the ruling party, campaigning for the forthcoming Uva Provincial Council elections, brought a transformer to the village; however no further steps have been taken to supply power to the houses.
The village is located approximately nine km away from Passara and Lunugala areas in the Badulla district.
Our pictures depict some of the hardships the villagers undergo due to the lack of a proper roadway.
