Joshua, Vidhurinda and Sachiththa to star at SOSL Young Soloists’ concert
View(s):The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka is preparing once again for its annual Young Soloists concert.
This year, the Young Soloists concert features two talented young musicians: Joshua Asokan, performing Mendelssohn’s piano concerto no.1 in G minor, and Vidhurinda Samaraweera, performing Mozart’s Horn concerto no. 3 in E flat major. The SOSL will also be performing an original piece entitled “Battle of the Space Warriors” by 19 year-old composer, Sachiththa Fernando.
Joshua Asokan is a student of Stafford International School and formerly, St. Benedict’s College. He started playing the piano by ear at the age of three, but began formal lessons in music with Mrs. Joy Gnanadurai. He is now under the guidance of Ramya De Livera Perera and is preparing for his diploma in performance.
Vidhurinda Samaraweera is a student of S. Thomas’ College, Mt.Lavinia, currently studying Bio-science. His first exposure to music was at the hands of Mr. Lal De Saram, who taught him piano and guitar. His interest in orchestral music was sparked when he joined the Thomian Chamber Orchestra. Vidhurinda was taught the art of playing the French Horn by Manilal Weerakoon, who was the principal Horn player of the SOSL for many years.
Sachiththa Fernando is a violinist, pianist, and singer, who recently began studies in composition with
Eshantha Peiris. He is a past pupil of Ananda College, and is currently awaiting university admission after A/Levels.
His composition, Battle of the Space Warriors, which receives its premiere on the 3rd, is a programmatic piece which tells the story of a fictional war between two space civilizations.
