Ben Eliatamby P.C. passes away
View(s):President’s Counsel Ben Eliatamby passed away on Friday night in Colombo after a brief illness, at the age of 74.
A past student of Royal College and of S. Thomas’ Prep, he studied Law at Gray’s Inn in London and qualified as a Barrister, before returning to Sri Lanka for an illustrious 50-year career in the Legal field. He was appointed a President’s Counsel in 1987.
His specialilty was Company Law and he appeared in many landmark cases in this field. He worked with distinguished legal luminaries of the time such as H.W. Jayewardene QC, Vernon Wijetunge QC, and Sam Kadirgamar QC. Many young lawyers who gained experienced as his juniors have gone on to become President’s Counsel.
He was Chairman of Merc Bank, and also Director of several leading organisations including the Bank of Ceylon, Ceylon Electricity Board and Ceylon Continental Hotel.
He leaves behind his wife Mary, sons Deepal (U.S.A) and Niresh (Ceylon Today), daughter Maneshka (U.S.A), daughters-in-law Meg (USA) and Tharuka (UNDP), and granddaughters Anoushka and Tharini.Remains will lie at A.F. Raymond’s Funeral Parlour from Tuesday, August 5. Cortege will leave the parlour at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, August 6, for cremation at General Cemetery, Borella at 5 pm.
