Nishantha and Roshita crown themselves
Nishantha Fernando and Joseph Roshita were crowned men’s and women’s champions at the conclusion of the 27th Federation Cup Carrom tournament at the Carrom Federation Headquarters Maharagama last weekend.
Nishantha Fernando met Chamil Cooray in the men’s final and champion Fernando exhibited superb technique in his slicing and straight shots which held the opponent at bay to finish with an easy 25/16, 25/06 win. In the 1st semi-final Chamil Cooray had to pull every trick out of his bag to beat Anas Ahamed who never allowed Cooray an easy passage thus went down fighting losing 23/25 and 24/25.
In the second semi-final Nishantha Fernando too didn’t find things easy when Dimal Senaratne giving a gallant fight to take the game into the third set when he scored a 25/13 win in the second but Fernando won the first and the deciding third set to make a 2-1 victory.
The battle for the third place was won by Anas Ahamed beating Dimal Senaratne 06/25, 25/17, 25/04.
In the women’s segment favourite Joseph Roshita had a smooth sailing to be the winner beating Chalani Lakmali 25/17, 25/11. Roshita playing a well controlled game giving a hard time for the defending champ in disturbing her concentration.
The two semi-finals of the women’s, winners Joseph Roshita and Chalani Lakmali had an easy passage to the finals when they beat M. Kanchanamala and Shashika Sandamali 25/08, 25/nil and 25/nil, 25/5 respectively. Madushika Kanchanamala trounced Shashika Sandamali 17/25, 25/nil to clinch the third place.
The next event of the Carrom Federation will be the Lanka Plate Carrom Tournament which will commence on August 16 at the same venue.
