Amãna Bank-sponsored mountaineer Elmo Francis breaks 4 Sri Lankan records
View(s):Mountaineer Elmo Francis, sponsored by Amana Bank, recently climbed Mt. Everest and was successful in achieving four altitude records for Sri Lanka.
Having planned to reach an altitude of 7500 meters by climbing the south side of Mt Everest, Mr. Francis’ bid was stalled in the wake of the tragic incidents which occurred atop the mountain resulting in the cancellation of many expeditions. Undeterred by the set of
events, he redirected his efforts to climb the summit of Lobuchi East which stood at 6201 metres, thereby becoming the first Sri Lankan to do so. In reaching the summit Mr. Francis broke three other local records including the first to Summit Jangbu Peak at 5400 meters, first to reach the Khubu Ice Falls at 5700 meters, and the first to camp at the Pumori Advance Base Camp at 5870 meters, according to an Amana Bank media release.
Speaking on his achievements, he said “I am happy to have achieved these records on behalf of my country. At a time when my journey was threatened, I was determined to somehow overcome the odds and do my country proud as well as do my part to bolster awareness on climate change”.
Commenting on the accomplishments CEO of Amãna Bank – Mohamed Azmeer said, “The entire country should be proud of Elmo’s achievements. At a time when combating climate change is the need of the hour, Elmo’s expedition is a kind reminder of the part every one of us plays in sustaining the bounties mother Earth has to offer us. We are happy to have partnered Elmo on this expedition”.
