47th Saints Quadrangular on August 23 and 24
All arrangements have been finalised to conduct the annual Saints Quadrangular contested by the old boys of four premier catholic schools St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Benedict’s and St. Anthony’s is scheduled to be held on August 23 and 24.
The main cricket tournament will be played at St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s grounds while the Over 40’s will be played at S. Thomas’ ground in Mt Lavinia. The finals will be played at St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s (Over 40’s) while the basketball and rugger matches will be played at St. Peter’s.
This will be the 47th in the series and this year the two day sporting event, where the four schools get together as a tradition to celebrate their fellowship and go back to the good old school-going days, will be hosted by the Old Peterites Sports Club.
The annual Saints Quadrangular was the brainchild of the Old Benedictines which was initiated in the year 1963 in conjunction with their OBU Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Invitations were sent out to most of the schools around the island but only three schools responded namely the catholic schools. Old Antonian Ranjith Samarasekera was a name to be reckoned with and was a pillar of strength as he has been involved with the organising committee since the inception of the tournament.
Originally the main cricket match amongst the four schools was played as a two day encounter, but as the years progressed the organisers decided with idea of making it interesting converted it into a limited overs tournament.
