Black Box festival brings young talents in Theatre
View(s):Black Box Theatre Festival, a modern German youth theatre production in Sinhala produced by three young playwrights will go on the boards from August 27 to 29 at the Goethe Hall, German Cultural Centre, Colombo 7. Presented by INTER ACT ART with the support from Goethe Institute, Colombo and several others, the festival showcases three plays ‘Oba Saha Mama’ (Me and You) directed D.K. Atigala, Sinhala version of Ingeborg Von Zadow’s ‘Katte and Freadha’ directed by Shamika Dilhan and ‘Boxer’ directed by Rejee Chandima based on Lutz Hübner’s ‘The Hart of Boxer’.
The festival is an opening for three young playwright who were grown up under the guidance of welknown theater director M. Safeer and his Inter Act Art movement. “We made these plays amidst many difficulties. We have been branded as provincial playwrights and given step motherly treatment because we are from outside Colombo. Not only we have been treated like this but we have been asked by so called popular playwrights not to make too many plays,” says D.K. Aatigala the director of ‘Oba saha Mama’.
“However there are two people in this field who are encouraging us, Parakrama Niriella and M. Safeer to whom we are grateful,” he said in thankful note.
Rejee Chandima director of ‘Boxer’ said ‘this is the most difficult, but most thrilling and creative experience in my life. “This was an educational process and a challenge I had to face. Even though it was complex, it gave a certain amount of amusement to me. It was not only a new creation but something to preserve for the rest of my life,” he said thrilled by his debut theatre experience.
Shamika Dilhan director of ‘Katt and Freadha’ said the was an opportunity experiment himself about his own abilities. “The script based on German theatre production made me to understand how challenging, self educative a drama direction is. I was forced to look at different angles shapes and ideas,” he said.
Presented by Inter Act Art and Vinivida Drama Team, the cast include Naween Nishara. Meranjana Apsarani, Kasum Chiranja and Nidun Akalanka for ‘Oba saha Mama’, Thilini Munasinghe, Asha Hansani Perera and Regee Chanidma for Katt and Freadha’ and
Lahiru Madivila, Harith Asanka and Kavinga Fonseka for ‘Boxer’. Only 100 seats are available for each show and tickets are available at German Cultural Centre.
