A look inside the Veddah Museum

The mud clad building in the middle of the village is one of the most important places in Dambana, the village museum. This, we learnt, is the only museum completely dedicated to the Veddah people and how they evolved since the ancient days.

The first things that caught our eye when we entered this institution was the many weapons the Veddahs used to hunt. There were different types of bows and arrows made out of springy material that is amply found in forests, and pieces of rocks as arrow heads. There were razor sharp knives and axes made out of rocks too.

This ancient tribe uses clever techniques to fish. A small basket made out of wooden strips entwined together is used to catch fish in rivers and pools. This gadget is just right to get enough fish for them to get through the day, leaving many more fish in their waters. The Veddahs never harm the eco-system.

We also learnt how they collect honey during the past and present. The Veddahs do not often  collect honey now, due to the introduction of a new law for entering forest reserves. Climbing large and really tall trees or getting to a wasp nest can be extremely  precarious but they bravely overtook any obstacle. Honey gathering is one of their main occupations.

Do you know how they make fire? As  depicted in the museum, they made fire by ‘striking the axe head on flint to throw up a spark’ but the most
commonly used method was by using ‘the iron clasp of flint’ which they carry in their betel pouch.
