With the successful series against Pakistan behind them, the buoyant Lankan cricket administration which also overcame some recent hiccups

Marvan Atapattu

go into their first post turbulent executive committee meeting with some important cricketing issues on their agenda.

Dav Whatmore

The Sunday Times learns through the grapevine that the issue that would take precedence is the selection of the main coach who would take the Lankans to the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

As we mentioned earlier, among those who have shown interest in the job are – former Sri Lankan coach Davenell Whatmore, England’s present batting coach Mark Ramprakash, Former England cricketer turned coach Chris Adams who played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s recent success in England and Ray Jennings who did a short stint with the South African national team before taking over its under 19 outfit.

Besides it is also learned that former Australian cricketer Dean Jones who was involved in the commentaries for Ten Sports inthe just concluded cricket series also had shown some interest in getting involved with the Lankan team in the capacity of a consultant.

However the biggest issue at hand would be how the Lankan administration ascertains the input of Marvan Atapattu who had made an

admirable stint as the main coach while he held the job. The Lankan administration who gave Atapattu the initial opportunity of guiding the Lankan cricketers through the England and South African series was also given the task of handling the team against the visiting Pakistanis.
According to an insider it is learned that a section of the executive committee is of the view that Sri Lanka should not entertain the services of CV seekers after the setback the administration experienced with Paul Farbrace. Farbrace not only decamped at the wrong moment, but also joined the rival camp when the battle was about to be fought in England.

Of course Davenell Whatmore is of Sri Lankan origin and knows the Lankan culture. He also has the experience in handling the Lankan side twice before. But, the question that worries insiders is how he is going to fit in to the set up. However the probability is that Whatmore would soon be in the Lankan system.

Commenting on the issue former Sri Lanka cricketer and respected administrator Sidath Wettimuny said that he had no issue about the

Ray Jennings

nationality or the origin of a would be coach as long as he has the right credentials, but whoever is chosen for the job

Mark Ramprakash

should possess impeccable integrity.
