NACKSL conducts workshop to broad base its inner structure
The National Association for Canoeing and Kayaking in Sri Lanka (NACKSL), with the intention of broadening the player-base and imparting technical knowledge to its coaches, initiated a month-long workshop. The NACKSL has been granted the services of world champion kayaker Gergely Gyertyanos from Hungary with the intervention of the International Canoe Federation (ICF).
The workshop includes training courses for beginners and advanced courses for trainers in addition to detailed technical and theological lectures. The workshop began on August 20 and will continue until September 19 with practical sessions being conducted at the Bolgoda Lake Rowing Club in Moratuwa.
The workshop has attracted an overwhelming number of participants with majority of them being greenhorns, which the NACKSL President Prithi Perera considers as a great development.
“Since the inception nearly a decade ago, we have been a fledgling association, trying hard to promote this sport, which is more popular among adventure seekers and leisure makers. Over the years, despite us at the NACKSL working voluntarily, we can be proud of the little yet powerful headways that have

been made. This workshop is a result of our gradual progress at domestic level and the good reputation earned with the international community during their short span”.
Captain Priyantha Perera, the Secretary of NACKSL, who expects the workshop to gather momentum as more and more schools show interest in joining added, “We are keenly looking at promoting the Olympic sport of canoeing and kayaking, which is not only practiced in over 150 countries, but also, 156 countries have taken membership in the ICF. Canoeing and kayaking are Olympic sports and Sri Lanka being an island with lots of natural recourses around us has the potential to produce a medal at global level. Looking at that perspective it’s important to promote the sport among the youngsters. The response we have received so far for this workshop is great”.
