A good old sing-along with the Merry An Singers
View(s):The Merry An Singers (pictured on our Magazine cover) are easily one of the most recognizable names in choral music. Since the early 80’s their fresh, polished chords have entranced audiences and garnered a fair number of accolades. This month the choir will return to the stage with ‘I Wanna Sing ‘Most All the Time’, a sing-along and concert directed by Mary Anne David and produced by Andrew David. As the well-known duo will tell you, “there’s nothing like a good old sing-along for a great time.”
Vintage tunes will be the order of the day, with Cole Porter, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley taking centre stage when the Merry An Singers, both young and and not so young, take to the mini-amphitheatre at the Tourism Board Auditorium in Colpetty. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” says Mary Anne of the show’s format. She attended a concert last year that only reinforced her desire to do a show like this, simply for the great music and good vibes that are part and parcel of a sing-along.
While the Merry An Singers were the first to introduce a sing-along segment in their concerts during the early years, this is the first time they’ll take on a show that will focus on the audience from start to finish. “It’s very fun to have the roles reversed for once,” says Sandani Wijetunga, Ryan De Mel, Fallon Richardson, Upul Nawaratne Bandara and Sheruni Pilapitiya. “This time around, we’ll be getting the audience up on their feet and joining in from the word go. We’re looking forward to it.” They’ve had only a tiny breather between last year’s show, The Masters and the Musicals, and this one-some music is as familiar to them as the back of their hands, while certain others are entirely new, but it’s “very enriching to be singing these songs,” they enthuse.
I Wanna Sing ‘Most All the Time happens on September 20 and 21 from 7.30 p.m. at the Tourist Board Auditorium (7th floor). Tickets will be available at the entrance from 6 p.m. onwards.
