WW World wrestling a ruthless pastime

WW World wrestling bouts telecast daily on some of the International Cable Networks, differ very much from the conventional form of free style wrestling bouts witnessed in Sri Lanka. It is most disgusting that in world wrestling, a contestant could be mercilessly set upon and battered by one or more opponents in a most brutal and violent manner, even using lethal weapons like steel and wooden chairs and iron rods. These would also prove fatal. The referee too is at times at the receiving end of such harsh treatment. This cannot be termed as a spirit of good sportsmanship. This is a professional form of thuggerism and rowdysim encouraged by the World Wrestling Body in an effort to ensure a steady flow of funds from the large number of crazy fans who throng the auditorium to witness their idols in action.

Those competing in these fixed and at times pre-arranged events are weird and ghastly looking burly wrestlers, sporting funny “Nom-de-Plumes” and acting in a most peculiar and awkward manner gaudily garbed in fanciful outfits and hair-do.

An added attraction to these events are the participation of the female of the species who join the fray, herewith dominated by their male counterparts, perhaps to add colour and excitement to these contests.

These ruthless looking wrestlers, devoid of any techniques whatsoever could have dire consequences on the lives of our younger generation as they could easily be coaxed to adopt themselves to these forms of wrestling.

Stringent measures should be introduced to restrict the telecasting of these World Wrestling bouts to our local viewers as it would have an adverse impact on the lives of our younger generation who are prone to fall prey to these fiendish ruses adopted by these wrestlers to overcome their opponents, which are certainly not in keeping with the traditions and norms of sports prevalent in Sri Lanka.
