Kurunegala Plantations bags gold award at Agribusiness Awards

Kurunegala Plantations Ltd was awarded the All Island Gold Award in Agribusiness for the third consecutive year at the National Agribusiness Awards ceremony 2014 held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) recently where Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena distributed the awards, a media release issued by the company stated.

The company also bagged the Gold Award for Large Scale Producer Plantations for the fourth year in succession creating a new record in the Agribusiness sector, it said.

Kurunegala Plantations established in 1992 had been handed over to the private sector for management. However, due to it being economically non-viable and was in a state of downfall owing to lack of proper management by the private sector, the government took over the management of the company from January 1, 2005, the release said.

The company managing a portfolio of diverse agricultural products through cultivation, production, processing and sale of rubber and ancillary crops has been able to achieve a high turnover and profit annually with the establishment of new records.

It continues to be a Self Financed Public Enterprise under state management and had been able to pay dividends to its Golden Shareholder – the Treasury since 2007, the release said adding that total dividends paid to date had been Rs.230 million.

In recognition of the employees’ contribution towards their achievements, they continue to pay incentives based on their performance in addition to developing various production and Attendance Based Incentive Schemes, and have enhanced the living conditions and related facilities to their employees, which have resulted in high moral, dedication, motivation and retention of employees path, the release said.

This plantation company owns Durian Cultivation in Sri Lanka consisting of 1060 trees at their Mahayaya Area Estates in the Gampaha District, the release explained.
