Our Temple and Dhamma School
Sankapitty Viharaya which is
situated in Kothalawela, Kaduwela is the name of our temple. It was started in 1803. At that time, there was only one thera who was Rev. Hakpitiye Aththadassi Thero. Today it has a lot of theros.
Our temple is being developed day by day. There is a Sunday School and Pirivena. The Sunday School was started in 1979 and it was named as Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Dhamma School. At that time there were only about 300 students and 18 teachers. But today, there are about
1500 students and 40 teachers.
Rev Kanduboda Amaragnana Thero is the principal of our Dhamma School.
We serve the best we can, for the temple’s progress. The art in our
temple is famous and legend tells us that they belonged to the Kotte
period. There is a children’s club,
to build up their activities.
Rev. Kannangama Narada Thero is the principal of the Thakshila Pirivena and Wisdom (English Medium) Dhamma School. We think that the English Medium Dhamma School in our temple is a great step for us. We all wish more progress for our temple.

Dengue Fever
Sri Lanka is one of the countries in the world that is under threat of the deadly Dengue fever. Dengue is a virus that is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito but it doesn’t spread from person to person.
It is very important to identify the
symptoms before the fever gets worse as it can even lead to death. This disease is characterized by sudden fever, red patches on the skin with skin rashes, heavy headaches, joint pains and vomiting.
We can eliminate the chances of mosquito breeding by removing
garbage daily without letting it
collect, clearing roof gutters,
removing water from potted plants etc. If water is collected we should throw the water away and turn it upside down. By wearing long sleeved clothes, using mosquito coils, mats and repellents, we can reduce the chance of being bitten by
mosquitoes and getting Dengue fever.

My inspiration in life
I have a vision in life, a target, a goal which I will strive to achieve. It is to be an Architect.
It was a dark, rainy day. We went to the BMICH for an Architecture Fair. As I walked through the stalls I was amazed with the most beautiful designs of architecture. I was
successful to get leaflets from each and every stall.
After this I read
many books regarding
architecture. I learnt
many facts on architecture. Whatever my goal is, there is one thing important to me in life. As life on earth is not eternal, I refer to life as a holiday. We should enjoy life but life can be full of obstacles. We should be ready always. “No
matter what life throws you, you just got to keep going.”

An autobiography of a pencil
I am now in a factory, waiting to see what will happen to me.
I held my breath as lead was inserted into my wooden body. Then I was coated in paint,
blue and purple. I was taken with a few other new pencils and we were all put in a paint kit with all the other crayons, pens and paints. They were all good company and we were all hoping that there were people out there waiting to buy us. We were all placed on a shelf, alongside many other pens, erasers and sharpeners.
For days we waited on the shelf until one day the bell rang.
A young girl had come into the shop asking for a pencil and a notebook. My friends, the other pencils and I all saw that she had chosen a blue and purple striped notebook. She then came to the shelf where we were kept. The girl saw me and said, “Why he
matches my new notebook!”
I was full of joy as she picked me up and paid the shopkeeper. She took us both home and oh how much fun we had! The young girl, whose name was Ashley took great care of me. She never sharpened me, keeping me quite safe from getting small. And she only ever uses me to write in her journal. So till now I am leading a good life as a pencil.

Princess
One day
I saw seven little
German Shepherd puppies. Every day
I went to see them and saw how they grew.
They were black and brown, playful puppies.
One by one, they were taken away to their new homes. How I wished I could have one…! I cried and that Aththammi gave me her favourite pup. I was thrilled but she was sad.
She told me to take good care of it, to love the dog
and to name it Princess.
My Loona (dog) and the two cats were surprised to see this black, fat puppy.
Now it’s four months old and loves to chase the cats, digs Ammi’s garden, plays with water, goes for walks, has eaten Appachchie’s
spectacles, has torn his
storybooks too. And anytime is meal time for her.
Princess has become so big now, it is 20 kg. I am only 22 kg. And she is the boss of the pets.

The marathon
I’m going to run the marathon
Wearing a space suit
Or a cowboy who is leading the cows
Or as a wizard with a wand.
Yes I’m going to run the marathon,
Wearing as the Loch Ness monster
Or like a peacock full of action
Or like Robin Hood.
Yes I’m going to run the marathon
Although it’s even better to get myself seen
I’ll forget those wacky ideas
And stick with shorts and vests.

The lazy generation
What a strange world it would be if people sleep and eat all day. And robots are their servants all the time. Then the boys and girls will play video games all day.
If you’re also like that, you will be blind and lazy. But if you do any sports you can balance your weight.
If you think that robots are workers, they will try to do their own work too, forgetting that the people are their kings. Then all the robots will fight for the crown.

Best time during the summer vacation
From an overseas club member
Everyone loves their
summer vacations. There are loads of things to do to keep kids busy; Reading books, trying out a new skill, watching TV etc…
But what I loved most was caring for my pet chicks. I had six of them. Unfortunately a cat ate one.
My sisters and I named each chick, Doodle, Henny, Penny, Goosey and Lucy.
Doodle was the sweetest.
He had pale yellow feathers. Henny was more mature.
He always had his head high, showing everyone he was the
biggest. Penny was the shyest, always away from the pack,
making few ‘cheeps’ when I tried to catch him. And Goosey! Was he fat! I bet he ate half the wheat grains we sprinkled out for them. I quite liked Lucy. She was always sitting on the roost and sleeping.
The chicks grew fast. In two weeks they managed to get out of their box. White feathers grew on their wings. Speaking about wings, were they strong! It was funny to see them trying to fly out of the box. But the fun didn’t last long. We had to send them out of Colombo as we didn’t have garden space. But I still miss them and wish they’d stay longer.
