Importance of democracy through cinema
View(s):‘The Rosa Parks Story’, the tale of the civil rights heroine whose refusal to obey racial bus segregation as an act to fight for justice will be screened at 6 pm on September 16 at the American Centre auditorium, Colombo. The film screening is a part of American Center highlight on the importance of democracy through cinema. The documentary film ‘Street Fight’ which follows the 2002 mayoral campaign in Newark, New Jersey in which the Cory Booker attempted to unseat longtime mayor Sharpe James will be screened on September 23.
‘Enemies of Happiness’ a 2006 documentary about the controversial Afghan politician and member of the Afghan Parliament Malalai Joya directed by Danish director Eva Mulvad will be screened on September 30. In 2005 Afghanistan had their first democratic elections after the war. We follow politically active Malalai Joya in her trial campaign to get elected. Due to her pointing out several Taliban warlords wanting them prosecuted for their crimes against the Afghan people, she has since been exposed to several death threats over the last few years, and has been under constant protection. But in her home county she is regarded as a national heroine and has great support for her political endeavour.
