Beach litter makes waves

Mount Lavinia- a key tourist attraction in Sri Lanka- is known especially for its lustrous beach. However environmental pollution is threatening its reputation as a local beauty spot.

Dead fish, discarded plastic bottles, cups and cans are strewn in heaps on the beach. Regular visitors claim that the beach is never cleaned.
This beach is easily one of the more heavily polluted beaches in the country, and its worsening reputation is causing tourists to think twice about making it one of their destinations.

“My family and I are currently vacationing in Sri Lanka. We visited Mount Lavinia beach because it looked divine on Google images. But, it is sad to see it this way. Garbage is dumped everywhere. If authorities took time to clean it, this beach can be one of the most beautiful in Asia,” said 56-year-old Bernard Posey from Poland.

Meanwhile another hazard that needs to be addressed, as a result of this pollution, is the inevitable health risks to those who swim in the ocean close to the polluted beach.
