MAS Unichela Slimtex champions at Tape ball cricket
MAS Unichela Slimtex, Kuliyapitiya was crowned champions at the inaugural Singer Challenge Trophy 2014 at the recently concluded 10 overs inter Mercantile Tapeball Cricket Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Tapeball Cricket Federation. Super Fashions Co., Panadura ended as runners-up.
In the prestigious final played at the Buddhadasa Grounds, Pelawatte, Battaramulla Super Fashions, Panadura scored 61 runs for 7 wickets in the first outing limited to 8 overs due to inclement weather conditions and MAS Unichela Slimtex, Kuliyapitiya reached the target scoring 62 runs for 2 wickets in 6 overs.
Mohomed Rikaaz of Unichela bagged both player of the tournament award and Man of the Finals award while Kumudu Sanjeewa of Super Fashions and Shehan Madhushanka of Unichela Slimtex were adjudged the best batsman and best bowler respectively.
64 teams island wide participated in this intense competition sponsored by Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC were keenly contested in several stages and MAS Unichela Slimtex, Kuliyapitiya, Super Fashions Co.,Panadura, MAS Shadowline, Katunayake, MAS Casualline, Mawathagama, Maliban Biscuits Manufactories Ltd., Ratmalana, Grand Hotel, Nuwara-Eliya, MAS Slimline, Pannala and Hayleys M.G.T. Knitting, Neboda eventually reached the final round.
The closing ceremony and presentation of awards were held under the patronage of Asantha Karunaratne, Senior Manager, Merchandising and Promotions Singer Sri Lanka along with several others.
Due to bad weather conditions quarter-finals and semi-final matches were limited to six overs a side.
Quarter-finals: (i) MAS Active Shadowline 97 for 2 (6) beat Maliban Biscuits 93 for 9 (6); (ii) Super Fashions 72 for 5 (6) beat Grand Hotel N’Eliya 43 for 3 (6); (iii) Hayleys M.G.T. 43 for 4 (6) lost to MAS Casualline 44 for 2 (2.5); (iv) MAS Unichela Slimtex 57 for 5 (4.4) beat MAS Slimline 53 for 6 (6)
Semi-finals: (i) MAS Active Shadowline 65 for 4 (6) lost to Super Fashions 67 for 2 (5.4); (ii) MAS Unichela Slimtex 65 for 9 (6) beat MAS Casualline 47 for 5 (6)
