Mercantile Div ‘A’ cricket from Sep 20
The MCA cricket season for year 2015 will get underway at the De Soyza Park in Moratuwa when John Keells met Hatton National Bank in the tournament opener.
Besides the mentioned, five other top teams are scheduled to take part in the MCA Division ‘A’ Premier League and Knockout Championships which run until November 1.
Mercantile Cricket Association with a history of over one hundred years is lending its hand in the improvement of cricket in Sri Lanka. In the mercantile sector matches are being played in seven divisions which gives every establishment the chance to field a side. In the 2014 tournaments over 700 matches were played in all divisions including the Limited Overs and T20s.
This year’s Division ‘A tournament will be closely monitored by Sri Lanka Cricket. With the World Cup around the corner the national selectors will be looking for impressive performers as there may be two or three slots at stake. For the first time in the mercantile cricket history a national selector will be in present at every match. MCA was thankful to the SLC for giving a window for the mercantile cricketers to show their mettle in gaining national recognition as their performances will be closely monitored. Most of the Sri Lanka’s national cricketers are expected to turn for their respective companies this year too as there is a lull in international cricket.
At the conclusion of the tournament an emerging young player will be selected and he will take wing to Australia for further training — sponsored by the Mercantile Cricket Association. Last year Chaturanga de Silva of Commercial Credit and Finance was selected for the scholarship and he is on his way back into national contention.
