The Milo Under-18 Inter-Schools Rugby Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association will come to an end with the Cup final clash between St. Peter’s College and Science College Mt Lavinia scheduled to be worked off from 5.00pm at the Royal Sports Complex, Reid Avenue today.

Prior to the Cup final three other finals are due to be played starting from 2.00pm. They will be for the Shield title between D.S. Senanayake College and St. Sylvester’s College and the Bowl title between Prince of Wales’ College and Vidyartha College. Isipathana College and Trinity College will battle it out for the Plate title at 4.00 pm.

The Cup final between St. Peter’s led by Sandesh Jayawickrema and Science led by Nirosh Perera is no doubt going to be a closely contested affair as the two teams’ posses players who have represented the first XV team.

In the run up to the final the Peterites recorded wins over DS Senanayake and Prince of Wales in the first round games and then got the better of Isipathana in the quarter-final. In the semi-final St. Peter’s had a close game while beating S. Thomas’ 16-12.

Science too had an easy passage in the first round matches recording wins over Moratu MV and CWW Kannangara MMV while defeating Thurstan in the quarter-final before scraping through to a close 6-3 win over St. Joseph’s in the semi-final encounter. However in this game the

two teams are evenly balanced with neither of them being favourites. So predicting the ultimate winner is not going to be that easy as no quarters will be asked or given.

Prior to that the there is another interesting battle between arch rivals Isipathana and Trinity in the Plate final. The Isipathana who won the triple — courtesy their senior team — will be looking forward to add another trophy to their cupboard. The Isipathana juniors will no doubt try to emulate the seniors even though they missed out to qualify to the Cup final. In the semi-finals Isipathana defeated St. Anthony’s (37-0) while Trinity beat Thurstan (43-0).

Prince of Wales’ seems to have the edge over Vidyartha in the Bowl final due to the fact that they beat two top schools, Wesley in the quarter-final and Kingswood in the semi-final while Vidyartha came into the final courtesy a walkover. The Shield final between DSS and Dharmaraja looks to be in favour of the former who recorded a 27-0 win over St. Sylvester’s while Dharmaraja beat Zahira 10-0 in the semi-final encounters.
