Schools, railway stations, campuses, places of worship breeding mosquitoes: CMC
View(s):In a recent inspection, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) discovered that schools, railway stations, university faculties and religious institutions in the city were breeding dengue mosquitoes on a large scale.
“We found mosquito-breeding sites in 12 schools in Colombo, and several international schools with mosquito larvae. Letters to the Education and Higher Education Ministries, Department of Railways and Religious Affairs Ministry, will be sent, to take immediate prevention measures,” said Colombo’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Ruwan Wijeyamuni.
“Thousands of undergraduates spend their daytime at university premises. University authorities should ensure the surrounding environment is mosquito free. This should also be followed in hostels too,” he added.
Dr Wijeyamuni said, the CMC has also warned the Railways Dept, to clean up the Fort, Maradana and Dematagoda railway stations, as they have found many mosquito-breeding sites.
Meanwhile, seven temples, two mosques, two kovils and two churches were found to harbour mosquito-breeding sites.
“It is not only the priests who are affected, as devotees and children who come for Sunday schools too, will be at risk,” he added.
According to him, a recent inspection revealed 689 dengue mosquito-breeding sites in Colombo, along with 3,733 potential breeding sites.
