View(s):Royalists young and old together with their families let their hair down when the 14th Annual Inter batch Cricket Carnival organised by the Royal College Group of 2001 was held at the Bloomfield ground on Sunday and more than 700 old boys and their families made the most of it.
The Cricket Carnival was initially organised by the Group of 1987 but in 2001 took over the organisation.
The highlight of the day was the three six-a-side cricket tournaments for the 30 to 40 age group that was played for the Viji Weerasinghe memorial challenge trophy and won by the group of 2000 with the group of 2002 finishing runners-up.
The over 40 E.C. Gunasekera (Kataya) memorial trophy was taken by the 1988 group while the runners-up were 1987 Group and the L.D.H. Peiris memorial challenge trophy was won by the group of 2007 with 2010 taking the runners-up position.
Apart from the three main trophies all contestants were awarded keep sake trophies.
L.D.H. Peiris guided the college from 1972 to 1980 when it was considered the ‘Golden Era’ of Royal College.
Viji Weerasinghe gave his sweat, blood and tears to the College for two score years and ten as student, teacher and Vice Principal.
And finally E.C. Gunasekera who played against arch rivals S. Thomas’ in 1941 and was on the tutorial staff and Vice Principal at the time of retirement.
