Sheikh RKC and Manang Marshyangdi triumph
Sheikh RKC of Bangladesh and Manang Marshyangdi of Nepal emerged victorious in the (AFC) Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup Football Championship which kicked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.
In the opening game played at 1.00pm Sheikh RKC beat FC Erchim of Mongolia 1-0 after African striker Kingsley Chigozie struck the solitary goal of the game in the 65th minute. By halftime both sides failed to score.
In the second game of the day Sri Lanka’s Air Force SC made an early inroads by striking a goal in the 6th minute but Manang Marshyangdi bounced back to level scores before halftime and strike once again in the second half to secure a 2-1 win. The local supporters were thrilled when Kavindu Ishan scored for Air Force but the Mongolian side defended heftily before Shiva Shrestha struck the equaliser in the 35th minute. Anil Gurung sealed the victory when he put Manang Marshyangdi in front in the 54th minute and maintained the lead. The tournament continues today.
