Private and State bus drivers and conductors involved in transporting schoolchildren, are to be trained on its finer points, National Transport Commission Chairman, Renuka Perera told Education Times.

He said that the first of the training programmes was schedule to commence yesterday for drivers and conductors from the Western, Southern and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, with the other provinces to follow.

In addition to safety, they will be trained on punctuality, mindful of language in the presence of children, reacting to an emergency, keeping parents informed in emergency situations, etc.

He said some 1,200 buses currently operate under the ‘Sisuseriya’ programme to transport schoolchildren.
Mr Perera said that currently there was no such training programme and therefore, the Commission decided to introduce the scheme. Damith Wickremasekara
