Ladies’ College gave a stunning performance this year at the schools regatta and managed to grab championships in all three categories except for the Under 14. The marauding Thomians emerged champions in the under 20 category, while Royal became the champions in the under 18 category.

St. Thomas’ College sped across the waters in the last 300m to grab the championship in the Under 20 category at the Third Schools Regetta.

St. Joseph’s and Ananda emerged joint champions in the under 16 category. Ananda College also clinched the under 14 category championship. While the only saving grace for Musaeus, arched rivals of Ladies College, was winning the championship in the Under 14 category.

The highlight of the regatta finals held yesterday was undoubtedly the under 20 men’s event, where four teams from Royal, S. Thomas and Ananda Colleges gave a fierce fight until the last stroke. The Thomian team comprising Anuradha Nadaraja, Sandesh Bartlett, Ramith Nanayakkara and Vishan Goonathilake along with Kemil Peter (Cox) owned the Beira when they sailed through to the finish line from the last 300 metres clocking in 3.22.09. Their closest opponents, Royal College gave a good fight coming in only four seconds later.

A noteworthy performance was given by Royal sculler, Bilal Hassan who rowed though the race with steady power displaying his superiority in the water clocking at 3.54.08 he was way above the rest.

Musaeus College fought hard to win the coxed four race in the under 14 category and rowed through the finish line in 3.58. Their arched rival, Ladies college had to settle for the second place in the race finishing three seconds later (4.01) while Visaka a relatively new comer to rowing finished third at 4.22.

The schools regatta, held for the third consecutive time, had 18 schools participating this year. The meet was organised by Sri Lanka Schools’ Rowing Association (SLSRA) and was held at the Colombo Rowing Club from September 23 to 27.
