McLarens hold sway
McLarens Group got the better of Hatton National Bank to clinch the Grand Slam title at the 4th Mercantile Badminton Association Inter-Firm Team Doubles Championship 2014, which was held last weekend at the S. Thomas’ College courts in Mt. Lavinia.
The eventual winners were without their star shuttler, Niluka Karunaratne, who was unavailable as he was travelling overseas for an international competition. The Division ‘A’ shuttlers from McLarens beat Sampath Bank in the semi-finals to secure a berth in the final. However, a determined team lead by Navin Perera under the guidance of Rohan de Silva, broke all odds and surprised everyone gathered to win the Division ‘A’ Grand Slam title for McLarens Group.
Besides skipper Perera, the team included Thisara Nimmika, Achini Rathnasiri, Ruvani Rathnasiri, C.D. Samantha, Hemantha Panditharathne, Mahesh Prabath and Louis Karunaratne.
