Snatching baby jumbos is organised crime: Animal lovers
View(s):World Animal Day which fell on October 4 was marked by the signing of a pledge to protect wild animals, by a collective of different animal protection organisations yesterday at the Viharamahadevi Park. A walk was organised by the Centre for Eco-Cultural Studies for (CES) Sentinels Against Wild Life Crime (SAWC), with the participation of a large number of people, who supported the pledge.
The organisations emphasised the need to take strict actions against culprits involved in snatching baby elephants from the wild. Issuing a statement that capture and sale of adult elephants and baby elephants from the wild has increased drastically during the last few years the collective said that such actions fall under organised crime. Further the statement said that according to experts the torturing of mother elephants to take their calves is one of the main causes of the conflict between elephants and humans.
It also stated that such threats to wild life are a result of actions taken in the name of development and highlighted the need for remedial action to be taken immediately.
