View(s):

Members of the Sri Lanka Bonsai Association, will be holding their 18th exhibition, with the objective of sharing their experience and introducing this wonderful art to all those who are interested.

This year’s exhibition, “Reflections 2014- Living Images” will be held on October 10, 11 and 12 at the J.D.A. Perera Gallery, University of Visual & Performing Arts, No.46, Horton Place, Colombo 7. A large collection of Bonsai plants will be on display. Demonstrations in Sinhala and English will be held on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Bonsai is the art of growing trees in a smaller scale. Bonsai trees are nothing but nature’s beautiful creations in refined forms. Bonsai trees are pruned and shaped to highlight their true beauty.

First created in China, Bonsai was later brought to Japan, by priests and noblemen. The Japanese refined this art which has now spread throughout the world. The art of Bonsai can truly be practised, only if one acts in harmony with nature, and with a desire to re-create, these majestic trees in a smaller scale.

Any person could develop his or her own “style” while experimenting and exploring the world of Bonsai. The pleasure gained in doing Bonsai does not necessarily relate to the excellence of the plant achieved. The effort put in to developing a single Bonsai can be as satisfying as having a beautiful collection of high quality plants. Bonsai is not just another hobby nor is it just another artwork. It is a sculpture done using a living plant.
