Sri Lanka exports nearly 9 per cent of fruits and vegetable production to the Middle Eastern and the Maldives while 75 per cent of the processed items are exported to the European Union, a new study by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) has revealed. The study, titled “Fruit and Vegetable Sector Analysis 2013′ noted that Sri Lanka, per annum produces around 800,000 metric tons of fruits and vegetable for the purpose of exports to many countries around the world, while the island nation’s exports have grown from just 10 – 12 varieties to around 135 varieties in the recent past, the CCC said in a statement.

Sri Lanka’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports have recorded a 21.8 per cent jump during the first half of the year 2013, thus earning an export income of US$ 8.95 million during the referenced period.

Apart from the Middle Eastern and European region and also Maldives, the US also absorbs around 4.5 million kilograms of Sri Lanka fruits and vegetables per annum.

The study, which is available for purchase at the CCC include details such as the fruit industry in Sri Lanka, global fruit production, global export and import markets of fruits, top 10 fruits globally exported and imported and target extent and production of fruits 2014, etc.
