View(s):Fashion and Designing are trend setters in the society. Everybody is talking about designing and modeling for designers. Since the heat of the Colombo Fashion Week, a renowned fashion show, is still hasn’t faded away, designers are analysing the out come of it.
While Sri Lankan young fashion designers are busy with CFW, young enthusiasts’ student from Colchester School of Art & Fashion Design in Colchester, UK has just finished her maiden creative show recently. Farhana Jaleila Azeez, young Sri Lankan born fashion student successfully completed her first year design exam on women’s and kids wear.
‘This was my hobby from the very beginning. I really wanted to learn the professional way of fashion designing. But I didn’t have any opening or a chance to do it in Sri Lanka. But after settling down in UK about a decade ago I thought now it is time to give try to my childhood dream’ she said.
Farhana completed her first year of her four year professional course with much enthusiasm and managed to hit the top of her design batch for the year 2014.
I fallowed a technique called TR- Transformational Reconstruction under world famous Japanese designer Shingo Sato. He visited our University College and conducted his course’ Farhana added.
‘Transformational Reconstruction design is to recreate an already constructed garment to a new trend. It is considered as high end fashion’ she said. This is one of the latest in fashion technique invented by veteran designer Shingo Sato. ‘I am inspired by this technique and I am trying to develop the recreating technique. It is something to do with historical setting. It is like we are recreating a design from Greek epic or historical Egyptian scene etc. Giving a life to history is all about TR ’ she explained.
Farhana says she has to face many resistance from her cultural background and family circle for doing something very unusual.
‘But I have a dream to become one of the top designers in the world. I wanted the whole world to know that Sri Lanka is capable of producing world class designers. I am keeping touch with Denesh Chandrasena, one of our world class designers. His advices and encouragement are vital for me to grow’ she said.
Her ambition is to enter the Design faculty of London City University, after successfully completing the course at Colchester School of Art & Fashion Design.
‘My model designer is Rei Kawakubo, a veteran Japanese fashion guru. At Colchester Institute the instructors aim to provide students of all ages with the knowledge, skills and experience to equip them for life of design. I work in partnership with employers locally, nationally to ensure my courses are matched to todays standards and the needs of tomorrow’ Farhana said.
