The Animals’ Plea
You hunt and trap us for our flesh
Strip us for feathers, skin and fur,
Kill us for antlers, tusks and horns,
Take away our precious
newborns,
To a hell of tears, fear and pain
For all you want is greedy gain,
Our teeth and paws, fins, heads and tails
Musk from deer and blubber from whales,
A stuffed tiger or polar bear
‘A souvenir’, so you declare,
One in the web of creation
You pursue us to extinction,
Destroying not just us, my friend,
But writing in blood,
mankind’s end.
Brother-man, please this
murder cease
Let us live together in peace.

Trees
Trees are all around us. They are helpful to all beings. They help us to breathe fresh air. Trees give us shelter, food, medicine, wood, cotton, gum, paper and flowers. With the help of these things we do a lot of changes in our lives. Tea leaves and coffee beans are found from these plants.
There are many trees, small herbs, bushes, climbers, creepers etc.
We must save these green plants for a better future for all beings. It is good to grow plants as much as we can. It is told, plant a new plant for every tree that is cut down.

The National Flag
The National Flag of any county symbolizes the identity of that nation. Therefore people of that nation always pay their respects to the National Flag.
The Lion Flag is our country’s National Flag. There are four colours on it. They are red, green, yellow and orange. The crimson colour
represents the majority Sinhalese and the orange colour the Tamil
community. The green colour on the flag represents the Muslim
community. There is also a lion
holding a sword in its right paw which represents bravery and strength. The sword symbolizes

justice. There are also four Bo leave which show the ‘Four Noble Truths’ of Buddhism.
The National Flag is hoisted on all special occasions of the nation such as the Independence Day. It is our duty to stand to attention and pay homage to the National Flag when it is hoisted. A salutation to the National Flag is a salutation to the entire nation.

My favourite activity

I do many things during my free time. Some of them are reading books, watching TV and playing the piano. However my favourite activity is playing tennis. I started playing tennis in the year 2012 at school. I play tennis with my brother on our lane. I also practice at home on the wall and I have made a lot of dirty marks on the wall.
I learn about tennis through newspapers and by
watching television. Your hands must be strong to play tennis. I do skipping and wall tapping every day to strengthen my hands. Two main shots that I have learnt are the backhand and the forehand shot.
My favourite tennis players are Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Playing tennis is my passion and
champions keep playing until they get it right. My dream is to become a tennis champion.

The beach ball
There was a shop that sold toys and near the shop was a house. In this house lived a little girl named Molly who loved the sea and wanted to get a beach ball.
One day she got a beach ball and she told her mother that she wanted to go to the sea. Her mother said ok and took her to the sea. When she was in the boat her beach ball fell out. The girl was very, very sad. Luckily her mother bought her a new beach ball and she took care never to lose the new beach ball.

Hobbies give a purpose to life
Different people have different hobbies such as collecting stamps, reading, gardening, cooking,
playing etc. Hobbies develop skills that can be used in the future.
Having cooking as a hobby, you will learn to cook and wouldn’t have to depend on others for food.
Gardening is a good way of
getting exercise. With this hobby, you can be physically fit and you can grow your own fruits and
vegetables and be able to get fresh food that doesn’t have artificial chemicals.
The best way to gain knowledge is through reading. You can know what is going on in the world and will be able to enhance your
knowledge and develop your
vocabulary.
As children we need to play. By doing this we will not only be happy but also physically fit.
By playing as a group, you learn to interact with others and this will help in the future to interact in society. Playing games with
others helps you to work together and to tolerate others so you can make friends and socialize.
By engaging in hobbies, you have many advantages which will help you in the future to be more independent and help find a
passion in your life. So hobbies give us a purpose in life.

Gems
Sri Lanka has been famous for gemstones from the earliest times. It is an important export trade today. Many areas in the Sabaragamuwa Province are well known for gems. Ratnapura is the most famous region for gems. Ratnapura means the
‘City of Gems.’ It has gem museums displaying the wide range of gems available in the country.
The Blue Sapphire is the king of Sri Lankan gems. Rubies, Cat’s Eyes, Alexandrites, Aquamarines, Tourmalines, Topazes, Garnets and Amethysts are some of the precious stones found in Sri Lanka.
The craft was handed down from father to son. Now women too work in the gem trade.

Visit to a fire station
Yesterday our class teacher told us that we had been invited to visit a fire station. We all cheered happily. In the morning, I carefully packed my lunch and said goodbye to my parents.
I went to the fire station with one of my friends. Some of my other friends had already arrived.
The fireman greeted us warmly. They called us to go anywhere in the building. I saw some men sliding down a pole to answer a call. That looked easier than it was.
When I tried to slide, I came down with a thud. Everyone at the fire
station moved quickly. There were many fire brigades ready to move out at short notice.
When we came back from the fire station, we all had lunch. It was a day of great excitement. The visit to the fire station was indeed a learning experience. We got to learn fire safety tips.

Rain
Tak! Tak! Tak! Tak!
One drop two drops,
One drop two drops,
The drops falls to the earth,
The drops were raindrops.

The sun shines lightly,
the raindrops hiding in the sky,
The wind blows and trees were shaking down,
The sound is coming like a tiger,
Hash! Hash! Hash!
Now again rain began to drop.

Small children making boats and keep on water,
The boats were going along the way,
Hey! Hey! Hey!
The children were enjoying the day,
This is a good day for all!!

Waterfalls
Waterfalls are delights of nature that add indescribable beauty to our environment. Waterfalls are formed when rivers drop down from a high mountain. Sri Lanka boasts of
16 principal waterfalls, all safely hidden away in the protective misty hills in the central part of the country. Dunhinda, Diyaluma, Bopath Ela and Ravana Ella are a few of the more famous ones. The highest waterfall is Bambarakanda and the most beautiful one is Dunhinda.
Waterfalls help us in various ways, like generating hydro-electric power and also for irrigating our lands to enrich the crops that feed the nation. We should protect the forests and trees that nourish our rivers and
waterfalls and help them flow forever.
Let’s keep our rivers and waterfalls alive.
Let’s keep our motherland alive.
Let’s keep ourselves alive.
