Sumedha quits Uva Council post
View(s):Uva Provincial Council’s Deputy Chairman and UPFA member Saliya Sumedha yesterday quit his post claiming that the position was not sufficient to serve the public.
He said he was opting to remain as a member of the council.
Mr. Sumedha, son of Cabinet Minister Sumedha Jayasena, in a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa said even his mother had been sidelined from the development work in the district and she could not meet the expectations of the public.
The resignation came only a day after he was appointed during the inaugural sessions of the council on Thursday.
The Sunday Times learns that Mr. Sumedha was hoping to be appointed as a minister.
The five-member board of ministers was not sworn in before the inaugural sessions on Thursday as the list had not been finalised.
Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) President and Deputy Economic Development Minister Muthu Sivalingam said his party was expecting only one ministerial portfolio and not portfolios as reported in newspapers.
“In the last council, too, our party had only one ministerial post. We are expecting to get the same portfolio this time, too. Since the Government is doing more infrastructure and development work in Uva, there is no need to demand extra ministerial posts,” he said.
The council will meet next on October 23.
