Twelve new meet records established
Twelve new meet records were established on the first day of the 31st Mercantile Annual Athletic Meet yesterday at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Diyagama.

Forty mercantile establishments took part in this year’s competition with an invited team of athletes from India. The championship was conducted for men and women in seven segments – novices, 30+, 35+, 40+, 45+ 50+ and under 55. It was interesting to note that three athletes of the invited Indian team were responsible in establishing three meet records in men’s 1500m (50+) and in women’s High Jump (30+) and Long Jump (30+) events.

Long Jump (35+) O.B.A.R. Fonseka (Srilankan Airlines) 6.05m – record held by A.S.D. Aluthwatte Srilankan Airlines) in 2011
Long jump (40+) H.J.S. Z. Siriwardene (Airport and Aviation) 6.22m – his own record in 2011
100m (45+) Gihan Dias (NDB Group) 12.47 – record held by S.R. Silva and Susantha Mawala in 2008 and 2013
Women; High Jump (45+) W.A.S. Prasangika (SLT) 1.05m –record held by S. Sellammah (Texwood) in 2001
Javelin throw (50+) Shiromi Madawala (SLT) 20.2m – record held by W. Meelin (Colombo Dockyard) in 2013
High Jump (30+) Prafullah Narayana (India) 1.20m – record held by LD.K. Nadeera (HNB) in 2011
