Computer mother boards soon to be manufactured in SL
View(s):Sri Lanka’s EWIS has announced that its original device manufacturing (ODM) facility, opened in November 2013 in Sooriyawewa, Hambantota, will soon start making computer motherboards for EWIS brand computers. It was also highlighted that this achievement was a result of a partnership with electronic components manufacturer Tosslec Group of Japan, and its wholly owned local subsidiary TOS Lanka, while Intel also provided its expertise in aid of this undertaking.
According to company representatives, these laptop and desktop computer motherboards, specifically identified as a six layered PCB with surface mounted technology, to be used in conjunction with Intel chipsets, would eventually also be sold for use with other computer brands assembling locally. It was also expressed that these more advanced components could even form the basis for a new dimension of computer hardware exports, a completely new market which was different from what was currently coming out of Sri Lanka today in terms of computer related exports.
Further, EWIS also revealed that its Sooriyawewa facility had now reached a per-day production capacity of 714 desktop or 1,786 laptop computers, which would be expanding soon with the planned addition of third assembly line. It also emerged that the EWIS factory, which currently employs a workforce of 100, most of whom were from the area itself, would also increase its staff compliment to around 250 to meet its expansion plans.
