University of Colombo renews Mobitel ‘mLearning’, the cutting-edge distance learning initiative
View(s):The University of Colombo (UOC) recently renewed its partnership with Mobitel to deliver a continuous service of the online learning initiative ‘mLearning’ that facilitates distance learning for a range of post-graduate degree programmes.
‘mLearning’ is an exclusive learning platform designed and developed by Mobitel, that provides a quality education while catering to the needs of a student’s lifestyle. Mobitel ‘mLearning’ is the only commercially available facility in Sri Lanka that allows students to follow a complete university course without being physically present in a classroom, the mobile phone company said.
The UOC covers a wide range of post-graduate degree programmes via Mobitel ‘mLearning’ which include a Master’s Degree Programme in Public Administration, Master’s Degree Programme in Public Management, Post-graduate Diploma in Public Administration, Post-graduate Diploma in Public Management, Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management, Executive Diploma in Marketing and Executive Diploma in Public Management and Governance.
“The mLearning post-graduate degree programmes could be followed while at home or in any part of the world, thereby giving students the opportunity to obtain a well recognised local post-graduate degree while residing in any part of the world. Following a post-graduate degree programme through mLearning also avoids the hassle of spending time and money that is usually incurred on transportation, student accommodation amongst other expenses which are often a difficulty for students. For that reason mLearning provides students stationed in distant regions outside the Western Province an opportunity to further pursue their education to meet the needs of a competitive global market,” noted UOC Vice Chancellor, Kumara Hirimburegama.
“Mobitel mLearning is perhaps the world’s only platform that offers virtual class room programmes while providing an exclusive learning management system in one single platform. Mobitel has always strived to make a valuable contribution to many sectors such as apparel, industrial and transport, including education, through its technological expertise and service offerings. Therefore it is with great privilege that we extend our partnership with the University of Colombo for the mLearning programme,”
Mobitel CEO Ranjith G. Rubasinghe stated.
The UOC’s Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) has trained hundreds of students through the programme, and has been using Mobitel ‘mLearning’ since 2009, a year before the distance learning platform took off in 2008. Mobitel ‘mLearning’ has so far been introduced to many leading educational institutes such as, the University of Kelaniya, CIMA Sri Lanka (South East Asia Region), PIM – Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayawardenapura, Sri Lanka College of Surgeons and Kandy Society of Medicine and the Kotelawala Defence Academy.
