Those admitted to Colleges of Education will be awarded Degrees instead of Diplomas, from next year, said Education Minister Bandula Gunewardena.

At the National Colleges of Education Diploma-awards ceremony on Wednesday, the Minister said that those admitted to National Colleges of Education will be awarded Bachelors in Education, following an extra year’s training at the National Institute of Education.

At present, students obtain the Diploma in Teaching, following a two-year training and a one-year practical training.

“Those who pass the GCE A/L exam with high z-scores, obtain a Degree with no work experience, while a Diploma holder has two years training and another year of practical experience. It is unfair not to award them a Degree,” Minister Gunewardena elaborated.

On Wednesday, 3,013 trainees received Diplomas for 2010-2012 and another 3,030 received diplomas for 2011-2013.

The Minister said that the Government has introduced a policy to ensure Higher Education for all GCE O/L students who fail Maths and not drop out.
