Anulians thrive in this shuttle sport
View(s):Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda shuttlers who had been dominating schools badminton for over two decades proved again their superiority by winning the Girls Overall Championship with 40.5 points at the Junior National Badminton Championships 2014, organised and conducted by the Badminton Association of Sri Lanka concluded at the Royal College Sports Complex recently. Anulians are proud to maintain their super standard for such a long time and in the recent past these girls from Nugegoda always finished among the top three positions in all the age groups of the Super ‘A’ Division Badminton championships.
It is not only in badminton in the other sports disciplines like cricket, chess, netball, swimming and table tennis Anulians are always at the forefront thus making their school flag fly high. Though Anula Vidyalaya rides high in badminton it is sad to mention that they don’t have a badminton court for themselves for practices and had to hire badminton courts in and around Nugegoda for five days a week.
It is interesting to note that at Anula Vidyalaya they have a special programme in grooming players from Grade two onwards. They had been given training in technique and the fundamentals of the game. This proper guidance is the secret behind the success of Anula Vidyalaya badminton. Practices are conducted for five days from Monday to Friday standard players and Thursdays are reserved for the beginners.
The proudest moment for Anula Vidyalaya this year was four of her daughters namely Lakshmi Shashibhani, Thisuri Peiris, Kalani Pramodya and Nayanathara Teshani were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Asia Youth Under 19 Badminton Championship at Chinese Taipei.
Anula shuttlers are under the wings of that former Sri Lanka badminton stalwart Chameera Kumarapperuma who had represented Sri Lanka in many International competitions and ably supported by the Teacher-in-Charge Watsala Senadheera.
